MUTU System Gains Approval in NHS Apps Library

MUTU System, the leading digital pelvic floor and core muscle exercise and support programme, has been officially added to the NHS Apps Library.

The app, which currently supports over 68,000 women around the world, joins a select list of recommended health platforms to have met the detailed criteria of NHS Digital standards. MUTU System was founded by maternal health expert Wendy Powell and the inclusion in the NHS Apps library marks the latest high profile evidence to support the clinical benefits of the 12 module programme.

MUTU System is a programme supporting mothers in more than 150 countries, young and old, expectant and established, of all shapes and sizes – proven to remedy physical symptoms such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, painful sex and diastasis recti. MUTU System comprises of unique features and programmes taught over 12 modules. The solution is referred to by specialist pelvic health physical therapists, surgeons, midwives, and hospital women’s health physiotherapists.

The company is currently engaging in a partnership with the Women’s Health Physiotherapy Department at Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust (NNUH) to provide their patients with crucial digital support in the absence of face to face NHS consultations to support pelvic health issues, discomforts and anxieties during the COVID-19 pandemic. This came after the Women’s Health Physiotherapist team at NNUH approached Wendy in 2019 to partner on a pilot study to clinically test the MUTU System programme, after patients had referenced it during NHS consultations. Though discussions began on how MUTU System could compliment physio care, it would soon change to how digital pelvic health exercises and close guidance could support vulnerable women in light of the pandemic.

The NHS Apps library helps users to find trusted and effective health and wellbeing apps that have been assessed to be clinically safe and secure. All products approved by the library must have met stringent NHS Digital standards. Owing to the complexity of the medical concerns and mental issues addressed by MUTU System, assessments were comprehensively evaluated against the Digital Assessment Questions (DAQ) process. Developed by NHS Digital, the methodology evaluates apps against criteria including effectiveness, regulatory approval, safety, privacy, security, usability, interoperability, technical stability and change management.
