On May 17th, 500+ of pharma’s clinical innovation will come together for the home of clinical collaboration, Reuters Events: Pharma Clinical 2022, to set new standards in digital and patient innovation for clinical transformation.

The catalyst for this has been the accelerated technological adoption in clinical trials, but a general feeling still that enough isn’t being done for patients, failing to develop co-created, data-driven, standardised and accountable trial design.

Senior leaders from Sanofi, Pfizer, Bayer, FDA, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Bristol Myers Squibb, Roche, Novartis and more are collaborating on May 17th, with one mission in mind: it’s time to develop a better system. “We must establish new industry-wide benchmarks, leverage digital technology, and ensure permanent cultural change toward patient- centric trials. If we don’t act immediately, we risk losing patient trust.” Said Usmaan Khan, Global Project Director and leader for Reuters Events: Pharma Clinical 2022.

The community is growing every day so don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of this movement- this event is free for pharma and biotech executives, patient advocates and patient associations! Secure your pass today: https://bit.ly/3w81QFY

The 44th World Hospital Congress (WHC) came to an upbeat close last week in Barcelona (Spain), a year later than originally planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the event public health leaders and hospital CEOs in Europe and North America exchanged ideas on how organisations can prepare for the next global pandemic, alongside building more resilient healthcare systems.

For the first time, the event was fully hybrid, facilitating the participation of more than 1,200 in-person and 300 online delegates from over 70 countries. For four days, leaders and decision-makers in the healthcare community shared knowledge and good practices, exchanged new ideas and innovations, and networked with other senior executives.

The theme for the 44th World Hospital Congress was, “People on board: Transforming healthcare by blending agility, responsiveness, and resilience”. During the event delegates shared many lessons and experiences from the Covid-19 pandemic. Alongside this hospital leaders were keen to build upon those experiences and implement strategies that can help mitigate mass public health issues in the future.

Highlights of the programme included:

  • An Opening Ceremony keynote address by Dr Hans Kluge, Regional Director for Europe of the World Health Organization, who paid tribute to health and care workers: “I want to ask you to convey – on behalf of WHO – a message of gratitude, respect and support to the teams you lead and their families, for the commitment, altruism and resilience you have all shown in the past two years.”
  • Public health leaders and hospital CEOs in Europe and North America exchanging ideas on getting ready for the next global pandemic. Hospital Clínic de Barcelona’s CEO-Clinical Hospital, Prof Josep M. Campistol, shared that: “We need an integrated healthcare system if we are to be ready for the next global pandemic. This involves using artificial intelligence, digital technology and new IT infrastructures.” Meanwhile, Vaccinations Coordinator at The White House/USG, Dr Bechara Choucair, ended his virtual presentation with a reminder and challenge: “We already have the tools. We just have to finish the job with the truth, science… and confidence.”
  • Key stakeholders from industry, government and public health shared the lessons to learn from accelerating research, development and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr John Nkengasong, Director of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, shared the vaccine situation in Africa: “Vaccine hesitancy is not a problem here. The key challenge we have in the content is access to vaccines and how to get predictable access to vaccines.” and called for a new public health order for Africa.
  • Leaders in nursing outlined their critical contribution to transforming healthcare during a worldwide pandemic. Dr Maria Eulàlia Juvé Udina, Board Member at International Council of Nurses, Nurse Executive at the Catalan Institute of Health, and Nurse Researcher at IDIBELL Universitat de Barcelona, shared that: “Even before COVID-19, there was already the imbalance between required hours by patients and available professional nursing hours.” This imbalance weakens hospitals resulting to situations like poor care quality and clinical outcomes, and even higher mortality.
  • A European-focused session explored ways to adopt, implement and scale up the organizational and technological innovations to come from the pandemic. Led by Dr Josep Figueras, Director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, who emphasized the power of collaborations between hospitals and stated: “The innovation is the implementation of the existing innovation.”
  • Also, during the event the IHF launched a Special Interest Group on “Leadership for Sustainability”, teaming up with Deloitte to support healthcare leaders in taking action on climate change and the winners in each of six prestigious categories of the IHF Awards 2021 were announced at a special ceremony. You can see all the winners at https://worldhospitalcongress.org/2021-winners/

The WHC is the premier event in the International Hospital Federation’s (IHF) calendar and the organizing partner and host for the 44th World Hospital Congress was La Unió Catalana d’Hospitals (UCH). The 45th World Hospital Congress will take place in Dubai (UAE) on 9–11 November 2022.

The International Hospital Federation (IHF) has announced the finalists of the IHF Awards 2021 which recognise the exceptional work of hospitals and healthcare providers around the world in key areas of service and delivery.

This year, 250 entries were submitted from 38 countries/territories – a record since the Awards were established in 2015. A total of 50 finalists have been shortlisted across six categories, from which the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards will be given, as well as honourable mentions to other exceptional entries in each category.

The rigorous judging process involved an extensive review by the Awards Committee, composed of health leaders from around the world. The scoring is based on five criteria: originality and innovativeness; intended impact; adaptability and scalability; scientific rigor; and clarity.

The six awards categories are:

  • Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Hospital Award – recognizing institutions (not individual projects) that excelled in several areas including, but not limited to, quality and patient safety, corporate social responsibility, healthcare leadership and management practices and supporting sustainability initiatives.
  • American College of Healthcare Executives Excellence Award for Leadership and Management – recognizing excellence or outstanding achievements in strong leadership and management in leading a hospital or a health service provider.
  • Austco Excellence Award for Quality and Patient Safety – recognizing excellence or outstanding achievements in promoting quality and patient safety.
  • Ashikaga-Nikken Excellence Award for Green Hospitals – honoring hospitals and healthcare organizations promoting sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives.
  • Seddiqi Holding Excellence Award for Corporate Social Responsibility – recognizing excellence or outstanding achievements in advancing corporate social responsibility.
  • Sultanate of Oman Excellence Award for Health Services During Crisis – recognizing achievements of hospitals and healthcare organizations in developing countries during a time of crisis.

Dr. Lawrence Lai, Chair of the IHF Awards Committee, spoke of his admiration for the quality of entries, “The IHF Awards were introduced in 2015 to recognize the exceptional work of hospitals and healthcare providers around the world in key areas of service and delivery. It is my privilege, as chairman of the Awards Committee, to be given the opportunity to review so many excellent submissions this year, especially when the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging. With so many excellent entries in these challenging times, it is indeed very difficult to select the winners. To me, all the submitted entries this year are winners!

With the overwhelming support of IHF Members and organizations in the Awards Programme this year, I am confident that the number and the quality of entries from around the world will continue to grow in the future.

This year’s winners will be revealed on 10 November at 18:00 CEST as a highlight in the program of the 44th World Hospital Congress (WHC) at the Fira Montjuïc conference center, Barcelona, where the winning projects and programs will be announced to an audience of hospital and healthcare leaders from around the globe.

Ronald Lavater, CEO of the IHF, expressed his appreciation for all contributors to the success of this year’s Awards, “It’s a great achievement to receive a record number of entries in 2021 as well as to launch two new Awards categories. My thanks go to every hospital and health service provider who submitted an entry – there are so many impressive and inspirational projects that it’s our honor to recognize. I’m also very grateful to the members of the Awards Committee for their dedication to careful judging, and to the sponsors of the Awards for their support.

Peppy Health, an app that connects people going through challenging health stages with real-life, experienced practitioners via a secure mobile app, has been crowned winner of Digital Health Rewired Pitchfest 2021.

Peppy Health Wins NHS Real-world Test Bed Opportunity at Digital Health PitchFest

In a live final at Digital Health Rewired on Friday (19 March), Peppy Health went head to head with three other finalists: Concentric Health, a digital consent and shared decision-making web application; MediShout, an app that digitises operational processes to save time; and Tekihealth Solutions, a remote diagnostic solution that helps provide clinicians offer immediate medical intervention.

Peppy Health’s solution provides access to chats, webinars, vetted resources and video or phone consultations. It’s aim is to support users through challenges including menopause, fertility and parenthood, while decreasing pressure on health services.

It was founded in 2018 by Mridula Pore, Evan Harris and Max Landry, who all saw a gap in the market and an opportunity to offer a solution for organisations looking to better support their people. Peppy Health currently works with Santander, SAP, BNP Paribas, Aviva and Wickes, with plans to expand more widely in the health and care sector.

Mridula Pore said: “We know that, often, major life transitions aren’t supported adequately by traditional health services, healthcare benefits or private medical insurance. “Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic has led to more demand than ever before for virtual healthcare solutions that are accessible by all. Peppy gives its users trustworthy, practitioner-led fertility, perinatal and menopause support, available at the touch of a button via a secure mobile app.”

Upon winning the competition, co-founder Mridula Pore said: “I am delighted, I don’t know what to say. It’s huge because we really want to look at serving the needs of organisations and we know that the NHS is under huge pressures and we want to be part of helping that.”

As winner, Peppy Health has the unique opportunity to have their innovation tested and scaled at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust through its CW Innovation programme. Run in partnership with hospital charity CW+, CW Innovation identifies, embeds and evaluates a portfolio of innovative initiatives and solutions that improves patient care and addresses some of the real-time challenges that healthcare organisations face today.

It is the second year the CW Innovation programme has offered winners a real-world test bed in whichever care setting their concept or start-up is based.

Mridula Pore added: “I’m absolutely thrilled to have the chance to work with CW+… it’s also my local patch so it really means a lot to me personally as well.”

Chris Chaney, chief executive of CW+, who announced the winner during the virtual PitchFest final, said: “We are delighted to again be providing a real-world test bed for this year’s Pitchfest winner.

“Since last year’s Pitchfest in March 2020, we’ve witnessed unprecedented advances in clinical innovation in response to the greatest healthcare challenge of our generation. As a sector we have innovated at pace and introduced a range of new solutions that are fundamentally changing the way our hospitals and health systems work and interact with the communities we serve.

“We are looking forward to working with Peppy Health at Chelsea and Westminster over the coming year and hopefully supporting the wider dissemination of this new and entrepreneurial solution across the NHS network.”

Peppy Health beat more than 120 Pitchfest entries to win the coveted prize, competing against 16 finalists during the Rewired festival in daily heats.

Applications for the 2021 edition of Pitchfest opened in November 2020 with a panel of judges given the hard task of choosing the final 16.

The judging panel consisted of:

  • Jon Hoeksma CEO of Digital Health
  • Chris Chaney, CEO of CW+
  • Jenny Thomas, programme director at DigitalHealth.London
  • Emma Harvey, head of Innovation Lab at NHSX
  • Richard Corbridge, CIO at Boots
