The IHF Awards continue to raise the bar since its foundation six years ago, recognizing hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world for their outstanding achievements and best practices in healthcare.

Each year, winning projects inspire the global healthcare community and bring pride not only for their hospitals but also for their countries.

The 2020 edition of the IHF Awards is bigger and better with the addition of two new categories:

• IHF/ Ashikaga-Nikken Excellence in Green Hospitals – honoring hospitals and healthcare organizations promoting sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives.
• IHF/ Sultanate of Oman Excellence Award for Health Services in Crisis – recognizing the achievements of hospitals and healthcare organizations in developing countries and war-torn or disaster-ravaged nations. Apart from prizes similar to other Excellence Awards, the winning organization will receive a 10,000 CHF grant in addition to the travel and accommodation stipend.

This year also features the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) as the new partner for the IHF Excellence Award for Leadership & Management.

IHF Awards Founder, Dr. Kwang Tae Kim says the vision of the Award has remained unchanged-to honor and inspire healthcare excellence globally- although the Awards program has grown in leaps.

Dr. Lawrence Lai, Awards Committee Chair said, “The introduction of the two new categories gives opportunities for more hospitals worthy of recognition to compete for honors, especially for those which have been investing in sustainable programs and delivering outstanding healthcare services despite their unfavorable situation.”

Submission to the prestigious IHF/Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Grand Award remains exclusive for IHF members. However, submission to the IHF Excellence Awards is free and open to all hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world.

The IHF Awards 2020 will open for entries on 16th March. Visit www.worldhospitalcongress.org/awards/

Aseptika (Activ8rlives) has been named winner of the Best Patient-Focused Technological Development in the 2019 CARE Awards, which recognises outstanding work across global clinical research. The Aseptika technology-enabled winning solution is Asthma+me, a self-care system supporting children aged 6-12 years that have asthma rated as “moderate-to-severe” and are treated in specialist paediatric clinics.

The 2019 winners were announced at a ceremony on the 2nd May at the Hyatt Regency Boston, USA. The organisers of the CARE Awards said this about the Asthma+me win:

“This is an innovative concept targeting the paediatric population, which is often underrepresented in the development of tech solutions. The potential benefit to empower children to self-manage their asthma is enormous. This impressive technology provides a great solution to help improve medication adherence in the paediatric population”.

In the UK there are 1.1 million children that have asthma and 110,000 have to be treated by paediatricians at specialist clinics. The UK has one of the highest rates of childhood asthma.

Medication adherence, learning about self-management and what to do in the event of an asthma attack, are key elements of the Asthma+me solution. Parents have the ability to immediately share their child’s data from their Smartphones with paediatricians, to get immediate medical advice.

Asthma+me has been co-designed with Professor Heather Elphick, Consultant Paediatrician at Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Trust (UK) to support the transition from treatment in specialist paediatric clinics to community care, with an initial focus of meeting the needs of children aged 6-12 years. It supports wireless medical monitors and includes medication diaries, trigger alerts for pollution, pollen and weather and recording of symptoms.

Asthma+me is used with the PUFFClickerTM – a Bluetooth tracker for pressurised metered-dose inhalers, which counts doses, whether the inhaler has been shaken properly before each use and a timer to support improved inhaler technique.

Children are involved in setting their goals and are motivated by incentives from parents, friends and family to promote behaviour change, increasing adherence to their Personalised Care Plan that is generated automatically on their Smartphone.

Dr Kevin Auton, Managing Director of Aseptika commenting on the award said: “We are delighted to have received this accolade from the 2019 Care Awards run by Informa and we are sorry we couldn’t join you at this year’s event but we are deeply commitment to a Randomised Controlled Trial taking place with children who have moderate-to-severe asthma alongside our clinical partner, Sheffield Children’s Hospital (NHS, UK) supported by Innovate UK.

Our Asthma+me solution increases knowledge and confidence of families with children that have moderate-to-severe asthma to self-manage. Improving skills, building expertise and having tools to forewarn of an asthma attack, all leading to better health outcomes, fewer hospital admissions and outpatient clinics means more time for children to attend school.

This award recognises the high levels of effort and creativity from the co-development teams at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Aseptika in this development, so as to better support children around the world.”

The convergence of machine learning, data analytics and digital technologies is innovating care delivery across the healthcare industry. As providers adapt to a range of challenges, this adoption of innovation and technology continues to drive new modalities of care.

Apply now for the 2019 Global Digital Health 100 >>

Across medicine and healthcare, technology can help transform unsustainable healthcare systems into sustainable ones, equalise the relationship between medical professionals and patients, provide cheaper, faster and more effective solutions for disease management and treatment. These changing trends present significant opportunities for developers like those featured in our Global Digital Health 100.

The companies featured in our annual Global Digital Health 100 are at the forefront of healthcare technology adoption. Our latest 100 innovators, announced last month, span the complete spectrum of healthcare technology from connected medical devices to clinical decision support solutions, digital therapeutics to telehealth.

We spoke to a number of our top innovators to find out what it means to them to have made the 100:

Pranam Ben, CEO of The Garage, commented, “The Garage is honoured to be chosen as part of this prestigious list, especially as it includes so many diverse organisations making a deep impact on the healthcare industry across the globe. Our company has pushed hard to take our technology platform to the next level for our clients. This year, alone, saw our platforms break into new realms of AI, telehealth and data analysis to help proactively bring actionable insights to healthcare organizations that will further improve their care quality and value. This award recognises the innovations we’re bringing to partners and to the industry as a whole, and I look forward to what the next year will bring for The Garage and all the organisations on the Global Digital Health 100 list.”

EarlySense is on a global mission to raise the standard of patient care throughout the healthcare continuum via contact-free continuous monitoring and predictive analytics. More than 150 global facilities, including hospitals, nursing homes and rehab facilities, use EarlySense’s contact-free sensor and analytics platform to monitor patients in real-time and identify potentially dangerous situations to intervene early, before they become critical.

Avner Halperin, the Co-founder of EarlySense, commented, “EarlySense is proud to be included in the Global Digital Health 100. This award acknowledges our ongoing efforts to improve patient care via ‘invisible’ sensing and smart analytics. With over 1 million patients monitored and recent publications showing an over 80% reduction in mortality associated with code blue events, we believe that our continuous monitoring solution is likely to become the standard across the continuum of care.”

Oxehealth is another solution provider helping healthcare providers monitor patients more easily and effectively. The company’s vital signs solution is certified as a Class IIa medical device for the noninvasive spot measurement of pulse rate & breathing rate. It is comparably accurate to conventional contact medical devices but it is completely contact-free.

“Nurse and carers are the heroes of healthcare; the Oxehealth team are working tirelessly to ensure the Digital Care Assistant gives them more time for hands of care where and when they are needed most.” said Hugh Lloyd-Jukes, Oxehealth CEO. “I’m thrilled that that the Journal of mHealth’s expert team have recognised the importance of Oxehealth’s Digital Care Assistant and included us in their Global Digital Health Award 100, alongside several other luminaries in the digital health space.”

The impact of technology on diabetes care, over recent years, has been profound and a number of diabetes tech companies made this year’s list. Smart Meter’s iGlucose® diabetes care solution is designed to be simple and fit conveniently into a person’s life without additional costs. Its cell-enabled technology eliminates the need for creating manual logbooks or downloading bG results. The ease of sharing real-time data keeps those with diabetes and their Circle of Care informed and engaged.

Smart Meter CEO, Cliff McIntosh, said “We are both excited and honoured to be selected for inclusion in The Journal of mHealth Global Digital Health 100 list. This recognition clearly supports our mission to enable the proactive and personalised management of diabetes through our global cellular-connected technology platform. We believe reliable, real-time data facilitates improved care and delivers better patient outcomes. Our iGlucose platform is perfectly simple for the patient and transformative for providers and partners. We thank The Journal of mHealth for recognising our efforts and including us on the list with the other innovative companies.”

Liva Healthcare is a Nordic innovative digital health platform designed to prevent and reverse chronic lifestyle diseases, such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Kristoffer From, CEO of Liva Healthcare, comments; “We are honoured to have been included in the Global Digital Health 100 power-list. In the last year, Liva Healthcare has showcased innovation and rapid growth on a global scale by working with private insurance, pharma and public healthcare bodies to drive patient engagement, clinical outcomes and healthcare delivery efficiency with real-time data insight. The next 12 months will see further expansion as we widen our presence in the UK and begin our German market entry alongside other European markets, with plans to be operational by the end of 2019.”

Point-of-care diagnostics have come a long way in recent years, offering huge potential for the healthcare industry. Genomtec is one company innovating in this space with an innovative diagnostic device based on the amplification and detection of specific DNA and RNA fragments, i.e. the gold standard of molecular diagnostics. Miron Tokarski, CEO, Genomtec, comments, “Being included in the Global Digital Health 100 list confirms that our pocket-sized molecular biology laboratory is truly needed in the market and will greatly help specialists, including medical staff, to take faster and more informed decisions where health and lives of humans are at stake. Our device Genomtec ID combines mobility, ease of use and speed of analysis with a professional amplification and detection of specific DNA and RNA fragments. The device uses microfluidic technologies and a lab-on-chip system. Test materials include whole blood, swabs, cerebrospinal fluid and many more. In record time of less than 15 minutes and with an efficiency of 99% is able to detect a pathogen of bacteria, viruses, genetic mutations and fungi.”

“This is a huge success for us. The list includes many great companies, representing world class innovation. Congratulations to everyone!” said Katarzyna Pala, Business Development Director of SensDx. “The technology and the device created by SensDx is a tool that boldly enters the future of the thriving telemedicine and remote diagnostics sectors” emphasised Director Pala. “Our concept concerns technology that will allow for the precise and simple application of tests for quick diagnosis of pathogens. The innovativeness of the solution consists in combining a user-friendly device that contains the tests with a free mobile app for easy reading of results at any time and place. Placement on the list we treated as a prize, which delights that our idea was confronted with the opinion of international scientific authorities from The Journal of mHealth. This success is not only a huge reputation but also will have the opportunity to use the reputation and experience of the partners, which is a unique opportunity to develop.”

BBI is another company innovating at the point-of-care. The SEM Scanner is the world’s first device to objectively alert clinicians to specific anatomical areas of a patient’s body at increased risk for developing pressure damage. Patient risk assessments are performed with the SEM Scanner before visible damage manifests at the skin surface – a world and clinical first.

Martin Burns, CEO of BBI, comments, “The USA’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved our SEM Scanner for objective risk assessment of the #1 patient safety issue in most care settings, bed sores (pressure ulcers): a world first! This population health issue, which is as big and deadly as the opioid crisis, is mathematically impossible to fully prevent given the current subjective standard of care. And yet, unlike the opioid crisis, bed sores are largely avoidable, hence being “never events”; serious medical errors which should never occur in any care setting. The only way to achieve full or near-full prevention is with technology, properly applied in a prevention-focused care pathway. That single insight shaped and motivated BBI’s mission; to make prevention real, through the use of technology. And far from being a promise, clinical reality is showing that near-zero preventative states are achievable when the Scanner is deployed. Prevention has been realised in Europe. Now USA patients are benefitting.”

“Thank you to the Journal of mHealth for this wonderful top-100 listing.” continues Burns. “Recognition like this is warmly welcomed, of course. But you should know that it makes a positive difference in our market access work.”

This year’s Global Digital Health 100 also features a number of companies from previous years. “For the second consecutive year, SnapMD is honoured to be named as one of the Global Digital Health 100 companies that demonstrates the greatest potential to change the way that healthcare is delivered,” said Dave Skibinski, CEO of SnapMD. “As one of the health-tech industry’s leading technology awards, judges took a particular interest in our Virtual Care Management (VCM) telehealth solution as software scalability is a key factor and the platform helps hospitals and health systems reach across a variety of medical service lines to connect the care continuum.”

David Van Sickle, CEO of Propeller which has also featured in previous years, commented “Over the last eight years since Propeller was founded, we have witnessed the beginning of the digital health era, as pharmaceutical companies, providers, payers and patients start to realise the tremendous impact that digital will have on the experience of healthcare. We are still in the early days of digital health, but every day we see our peers and partners take bolder steps to create digital experiences and analytical insights that benefit the care and treatment of disease. We are proud to be recognised by The Journal of mHealth as one of the companies helping to improve people’s lives by connecting the world’s medicines.”

We are pleased to announce our Global Digital Health 100 – recognising the most innovative health technology companies from around the world!

The Global Digital Health 100 is one of the HealthTech industries foremost technology award programmes, celebrating innovation and entrepreneurship. It recognises and supports health technology companies that are demonstrating the greatest potential to change the way that healthcare is delivered.

This year’s 100 sees many new entrants from all sides of the HealthTech spectrum, from new innovators looking to apply technologies like artificial intelligence and virtual/augmented reality to healthcare, to solution providers who are demonstrating rapid growth in more established tech-led services like telehealth, digital therapeutics and behavioural change programmes.

Click here to view the full Global Digital Health 100 >>

From across the Health Continuum

The diversity of this year’s list stands out immediately. With innovations targeting just about every corner of healthcare, the honouree companies offer technologies across a range of categories including, clinical solutions, wearable technologies, healthcare applications, medical devices, virtual reality and data analytics. These are all solutions and services that are transforming, or have the potential to transform, and disrupt the way in which healthcare is delivered.

The list also provides insight into the key sector trends that we are beginning to see emerge from across the healthcare continuum when it comes to the adoption of technology-led products and services.

Delivering Technology-led Services at Scale

Matthew Driver, Managing Editor of The Journal of mHealth, said “One of the most profound differences identifiable in this year’s cohort is the number of technology providers who are delivering their solutions at scale. In past years, many of our featured technologies have been limited by their relatively small user groups, but as the healthcare technology market continues to mature we are now beginning to see more and more solutions that are successfully delivering these technology-driven modalities to much larger user bases.”

Certain areas in particular saw stand out growth during 2018, including: Technology-delivered mental health treatment; diabetes tech; data-led disease management; telehealth; and behavioural change therapies.

Identifying the 100

The Global Digital Health 100 represents 6 months of analysis by the editorial and advisory team at The Journal of mHealth, who considered the offerings and innovations from companies across the HealthTech ecosystem.

The judging criteria analysed 10 different quantitative and qualitative evaluation metrics including: disruptive impact; proof of concept; technology innovation; social value; effectiveness; execution of strategy; and, industry integration. The selected 100 companies demonstrate true innovation and the opportunity to disrupt the delivery of healthcare at scale. The selection criteria ensure that companies are considered truly upon innovation, allowing start-up offerings to be compared alongside established and larger organisations.

Two pioneering NHS organisations have been recognised at the 2018 HTN Awards for their innovative work using InterSystems technology to help transform care for patients.

The judges, who included GPs and clinical commissioning group IT leads, as well as project managers, clinical leads and IT directors from acute trusts and mental health and community providers, selected Coordinate My Care and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust as winners.

Coordinate My Care, an NHS clinical service that is transforming end of life and urgent care for patients in London, was chosen as the winner of the ‘Digital at the Point of Care’ award. The service has used InterSystems HealthShare to build digital urgent care plans for patients with urgent or end-of-life care needs, sharing the plans with the capital’s emergency and out-of-hours providers so that they can deliver the most appropriate care and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.

Sean White, editor, Health Tech Newspaper, which hosts the awards, said: “The Digital at the Point of Care category was highly competitive with many fantastic projects that have made an impact to patients, professionals and organisations. The judges were particularly impressed with the financial savings from the Coordinate My Care project, noting savings of £2,100 per patient, and to date 50,000 CMC plans have been created. As well as the savings, it was clear the project has made a real impact for patients and how their care is managed.”

Professor Julia Riley, clinical lead at Coordinate My Care, said: “We are committed to empowering patients to tell the NHS and care providers about the care they want to receive at a crucial point of their life. Recognition at awards like this is important in sharing just what is possible through the creation of digital care plans, so that we can continue to expand the reach of the service to more and more patients.”

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has been pioneering in England as the first acute trust to use InterSystems TrakCare as its electronic patient record. The trust, which is a fast follower in NHS England’s global digital exemplar programme, is advancing digital maturity and looking beyond the borders of the hospital as it presses ahead with ambitions to achieve the globally recognised HIMSS EMRAM stage 7 in just three years. Judges selected the trust as winner of the ‘Impact of the Year’ award.

Sean White said: “The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust project clearly demonstrated the benefits to staff. The project was backed up with strong cost savings, and it was clear the project has changed the organisation significantly and really delivered for its staff.”

Dr. Graham Evans, chief information and technology officer, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Enabling efficient care is essential if we are to continue to meet patients’ needs in the NHS. Our work in North Tees and Hartlepool shows how technology can play a role in reconfiguring services, and in enhancing the working lives of staff. I’m very grateful to the judges for selecting our project for a prestigious health technology award. But it is important to remember that technology forms only part of the solution – managing people and process is just as crucial to achieving successful outcomes.”

Commenting on the awards, David Hancock, client engagement director at InterSystems, said: “Our customers continue to show what can be achieved with technology for improving the lives of patients and staff in the NHS. Projects like this are about transforming the way our health and care providers can deliver sustainable services in ways that matter to patients and the people delivering their care. It is great to see the strong impact achieved by these two pioneering NHS customers recognised by peers for others to see.”

The award recognises digital solutions that enhance communication within health and social care environments, whilst offering substantial cost and time savings to staff.

The Clinical Messaging app, which is to be rolled out across multiple Global Digital Exemplars over the next two years, revolutionises the way in which healthcare professionals collaborate, whilst providing support for Trust accountability and governance.

Designed as a replacement to WhatsApp and other consumer messaging tools used by healthcare professionals, Clinical Messaging offers a familiar user experience infused with powerful new capabilities. Clinical Messaging is able to integrate directly into electronic patient records to append related conversations, access information such as blood or medical records and provide subscription-based updates. Additionally, the app is able to offer a paging functionality that reduces friction and response times.

CommonTime’s Head of Public Sector, Steve Carvell, explained the importance of Clinical Messaging, “Instant messaging has become indispensable, though current concerns centre around issues of governance and data security. There is a rare opportunity here for IT to transform healthcare communication and drive efficiency throughout the NHS. However, for this to be achieved, organisational requirements must be carefully balanced against user needs.”

This nomination follows the recent statement by Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock that the NHS can become the most advanced health system in the world by embracing the best innovations in new technology. The statement laid out plans to make the NHS an ecosystem for the best technology available, and for a government led HealthTech advisory board – demonstrating a renewed commitment to innovative digital technology.

Ian Knight, CEO of Commontime, said of the nomination, “We’re extremely proud of the hard work our team have put in to bring this solution to life. Working closely with Acute, Social and Mental Health Trusts across the country – we know the challenges they face, and the lack of effective communication systems available. Through the Clinical Messaging app, we aim to give frontline staff an effective communication channel that improves on legacy systems and brings the NHS into the present day.”

The award ceremony will be held at The Brewery in Central London on October 31st, and will recognise solutions across a range of categories including technology, estates & facilities management and patient experience. The judging panel will be led by Roy Lilley, a founding member of the NHS Trust Federation, named among the Sunday Times’ Debrett’s list of the top 500 most influential people in the UK.
