For more than 140 years, the vaulted arches of historic Manchester Central have represented strength and innovation, originally as the site of one of the country’s key rail stations. Then in more recent history, growth and regeneration. With the ongoing reset of the NHS, the building’s historical pedigree was symbolic of the important juncture that Avi Mehra, co-chair of the HETT Steering Committee, said the NHS was now facing as he opened HETT North 2025.

He highlighted five themes for the year in terms of the NHS’ digital transformation: the “three big shifts”; tackling NHS data and infrastructure; embracing AI safely; the financial and operational reality; and the NHS workforce. He added: “2025 will be a defining year, the priority will be a shift from ambition and vision to execution and impact.”

Ministerial commitment and keynotes

Karin Smyth, minister of state for health and secondary care, also underlined this in a short, pre-recorded video address. The video chronicled the ongoing discussions on the NHS 10-year plan, and a raft of recent central initiatives to drive digital transformation, enhance clinical care and empower patients.

She declared from a giant screen: “We are committed to change, and we are committed to working with you to transform the NHS for future generations.”

Sir Richard Leese CBE, chair of Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, presented a positive vision in his opening keynote, drawing on examples of frontline developments to improve healthcare delivery and driving integration through digital innovation.

Amongst a number of areas for future development, Leese cited: further devolution; effective long term planning to move away from capital to revenue finance models; use of more AI and cloud delivery, while also ensuring governance and data systems in which AI was managed rather than AI doing the managing.

The Manchester ICB was also working with the Department for Work and Pensions to understand the impact of health on employment, and vice versa, to create a sustainable future health system – an area that Sir Richard Leese believed Greater Manchester ICB was at the forefront of.

He concluded: “I genuinely believe that in the next few years we can make massive in-roads on poor health, and using the scale and capacity of Greater Manchester as a demonstrator for this.”

Underneath the arches – showcasing healthcare innovation and digital transformation

This year HETT North welcomed attendees, exhibitors and speakers for a vibrant celebration of healthcare innovation and transformation. It featured a main plenary area, digital maturity forum, innovation trail and insights zone, with a floor standout being the world’s first mobile urology truck, exhibited by SAH Diagnostics.

Jamie Whysall, head of health at Netcompany, an IT services and consulting company exhibiting at HETT North, cited the networking value of attending the conference. He said: “We’ve had some really good conversations about what we’ve been doing elsewhere in Europe, and how those can apply to the UK and also how some of the work we’re doing in other verticals, could be translated into healthcare.”

David Holbrook, senior category manager for digital and IT at NHS Shared Business Services, agreed. “There’s a great atmosphere with lots of suppliers and interesting stakeholders from across the NHS, so plenty of great networking.”

The link between health and wealth

Back in the main plenary Richard Stubbs, chief executive of Health Innovation Yorkshire & Humber and chair of the National Health Innovation Network, continued the theme of the link between health and the nation’s wealth in his own keynote on digital innovation.

Currently there are 2.8 million economically inactive long term sick. Statistics from BCG Consulting estimated that reducing this number could boost the UK’s GDP by £109-177 billion over the next five years.

Richard Stubbs advocated a culture of taking world class solutions to common problems, adapting them and then embedding in local healthcare.

But how to go about building a scalable, financially supported and modern NHS?

In a panel session moderated by Ian Hogan, chief digital information officer, Leeds and York Partnership NHS Trust, there was a view that there should be a more strategic approach to long term funding. Otherwise, trusts would continue to raid their capital budgets to invest in the future.

Culturally too, on a number of fronts there needed to be change. Panellists discussed whether clinicians were too risk averse with regard to innovation and what the conditions were for welcoming it.

Andrew Davies, digital health lead at the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI), said there needed to be a bigger focus on measures to help bring in innovation. Olivia Burns, a patient entrepreneur and member of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, called for closer collaboration between the NHS and private companies, which had an “abundance of resources”, to help introduce innovation.

Some of these themes were echoed in a subsequent panel examining productivity strategies that initially posed the question as to whether innovation always entailed technology.

Sheikh Mateen Ellahi, a GP partner, said it was important to consider cultural change and Leah Parry, CxIO, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS FT, emphasised the need to  get the “bread and butter” issues right so that as a priority staff could get the “most and best” out of the technology that was already available. “We need to develop the core functionality first and ensure everybody has the same level of skill,” Parry said.

There was plenty of evidence at HETT North 2025 that getting the basics right is understood and will be of increasing focus in this crucial year for the NHS alongside its future development.

Once a great travel interchange, Manchester Central provided an exciting, buzzing platform for HETT North 2025 and ensured it provided a strong contribution to setting NHS transformation on track this year.

Leading Health Tech Agency will Provide Media and Content Services for the Conference and Exhibition at Manchester Central in February

Highland Marketing has been named as the communications partner for the HETT North show, which will take place at Manchester Central on 26 February 2025. The continued collaboration with the team behind the Healthcare Excellence Through Technology conferences and exhibitions follows the success of the support that Highland Marketing provided for HETT at ExCeL London in September.

Continued collaboration follows success at Healthcare Excellence Through Technology at ExCeL London in 2024

The specialist health tech research, PR, marketing and sales support agency will provide media, content and digital services for HETT North, which will take place at a critical time for NHS IT, as the government finalises its 10 Year Health Plan and digital, data and technology strategy.

The event will also have a northern flavour, with commissioners and providers from the Midlands and North showcasing the great work they are already doing to scale innovation and tackle the big challenges facing health and care, from waiting lists to prevention.

Rikki Bhachu, head of marketing at HETT organiser GovNet, said: “We chose Highland Marketing to support HETT because of its excellent reputation in the health tech market, so we are looking forward to continuing to work with its expert team.

“We want to make sure that everybody with an interest in digital transformation knows about HETT and HETT North because of the unparalleled opportunity they present to discuss the current issues and meet some of the leading suppliers from the UK and beyond.”

This year’s HETT North will have a conference built around two streams: a main plenary stream and a digital maturity forum looking at how IT can address waiting lists, support the shift from cure to prevention, support the roll-out of genomic medicine, and bridge the gender health gap and build resilient cyber security defences.

Alongside the conference streams, there will be an insights zone to provide additional networking opportunities and content for attendees and an exhibition on the main show floor to give visitors the chance to meet health tech suppliers and innovators.

Mark Venables, chief executive of Highland Marketing, said: “We are very pleased to be supporting the HETT team once again, at HETT North.

“Conferences and exhibitions are highly valued by NHS digital leaders and exhibitors, and it is great to see the organisers focusing on the health tech landscape outside London and the South.

“We look forward to working with the HETT team before, during and after the event to make HETT North as successful as possible at such a critical moment for healthcare and the health tech industry.”

In addition to media, content, and social media services, Highland Marketing will be working to amplify the views of exhibitors at the show. It will be filming short videos at the event and using social media to spread the most inventive ideas from the exhibition floor.

The Highland Marketing team will also be available throughout the show for one-to-one conversations on effective approaches to health tech marketing and focused communications to the market.

Companies interested in our full range of integrated services should come and find Highland Marketing on its stand or get in touch via its website: highland-marketing.com

The 44th World Hospital Congress (WHC) came to an upbeat close last week in Barcelona (Spain), a year later than originally planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the event public health leaders and hospital CEOs in Europe and North America exchanged ideas on how organisations can prepare for the next global pandemic, alongside building more resilient healthcare systems.

For the first time, the event was fully hybrid, facilitating the participation of more than 1,200 in-person and 300 online delegates from over 70 countries. For four days, leaders and decision-makers in the healthcare community shared knowledge and good practices, exchanged new ideas and innovations, and networked with other senior executives.

The theme for the 44th World Hospital Congress was, “People on board: Transforming healthcare by blending agility, responsiveness, and resilience”. During the event delegates shared many lessons and experiences from the Covid-19 pandemic. Alongside this hospital leaders were keen to build upon those experiences and implement strategies that can help mitigate mass public health issues in the future.

Highlights of the programme included:

  • An Opening Ceremony keynote address by Dr Hans Kluge, Regional Director for Europe of the World Health Organization, who paid tribute to health and care workers: “I want to ask you to convey – on behalf of WHO – a message of gratitude, respect and support to the teams you lead and their families, for the commitment, altruism and resilience you have all shown in the past two years.”
  • Public health leaders and hospital CEOs in Europe and North America exchanging ideas on getting ready for the next global pandemic. Hospital Clínic de Barcelona’s CEO-Clinical Hospital, Prof Josep M. Campistol, shared that: “We need an integrated healthcare system if we are to be ready for the next global pandemic. This involves using artificial intelligence, digital technology and new IT infrastructures.” Meanwhile, Vaccinations Coordinator at The White House/USG, Dr Bechara Choucair, ended his virtual presentation with a reminder and challenge: “We already have the tools. We just have to finish the job with the truth, science… and confidence.”
  • Key stakeholders from industry, government and public health shared the lessons to learn from accelerating research, development and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr John Nkengasong, Director of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, shared the vaccine situation in Africa: “Vaccine hesitancy is not a problem here. On October 14, Taiwan Excellence hosted a webinar on Smart Medical Solutions and Biotesting, welcoming viewers from all over the world. This hour-long webinar featured four medtech brands from Taiwan, all of whom are winners of this year’s Taiwan Excellence Awards.

Each brand presented their latest medical and health innovations, including TANbead’s Automated Nucleic Acid Extractor, Miicraft’s Optical 3D Printer, Aeon’s Acti PRP and A-BMC treatment, and EZYPRO®, an Arrhythmia Diagnostic Solution from Sigknow. These companies demonstrate Taiwan’s strengths in biotesting and customized treatments, as well as highlighting the upcoming trends of diversification and specialization in the healthcare industry.

“Under the threat of the pandemic, we are seeing the new emerging business model of biomedical industries. Medical services are moving from centralized to personalized to look after the individual needs, and smart medical care is believed to be the next wave that could change the world.”, remarked Dr. Chii-Wann Lin, Vice President and Director of Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratories at Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute.

With the help of the country’s solid foundation in the ICT industry, Taiwan’s healthcare leaders are now eager to expand Taiwan’s presence in the post-pandemic health industry by combining biotesting solutions, preventive medicine, telemedicine and customized health equipment. The organisers welcome healthcare professionals from Europe and the U.K. to watch the webinar and see what Taiwan’s medical industry can offer.
